If you have the means, drive 🚗 past
the ethanol gas pumps and find one with
pure gasoline.
It might be a little more expensive, but remember:
Your car won't go as many miles on an ethanol tank
since
ethanol provides less energy
per gallon than pure gasoline.
You can find a pure gasoline pump near you on
pure-gas.org.
Ethanol corn 🌽 production contributes to poor
water quality
in the good old USA 🇺🇸:
High nitrate levels in drinking water can lead to
poor health outcomes,
especially for infants and new mothers.
Excessive use of fertilizer and field-drainage tiles can lead to
impaired lakes, rivers and streams. Who wants to swim, fish
or canoe in a mess of green algae?
Yuck.
America needs farmers,
but it doesn't need ethanol:
Drill, baby, drill! The USA is pumping more
oil 🛢
than ever before.
We don't need ethanol
to power our vehicles. And any clean-air
benefits of ethanol are not clearly established science. Read more
here and
here.
(As a personal aside, we prefer driving battery-electric
vehicles (BEVs). No more trips to the gas station! No
more oil changes! Plus, they're fun to drive. 🚘⚡)
Don't blame the farmers!
Many family farmers are trapped in an economic
system that leads to bad environmental outcomes.
Soul-less multinational farm-chemical corporations 🧪
and predatory seed companies on the front end, and ethanol
production on the back end. The farmers take on nearly all of
the risk and the corporations get most of the profits.
We think that the best approach is to reduce ethanol demand and slowly
phase it out so farmers can again
produce actual food instead of fueland restore
the fragile rural environment. An
ongoing study at Iowa State University
provides a blueprint for farmers to reduce their
dependency on corn and soybeans leading to less fertilizer and herbicide
application and
better environmental outcomes.
What else can you do?
Vote for legislators and elected officials that support ending ethanol
subsidies. Call your current representatives and tell them
you will not vote for them next term if they don't.
Financially support farmers that produce food locally in an
environmentally friendly fashion. You can find them on
the internet or at a farmer's market.
